Public Statement from Northern Village of Inukjuak – Mayor

July 23, 2025

INUKJUAK, QC – July 22, 2025 – The Northern Village of Inukjuak wishes to address a serious and concerning issue that has recently impacted our community and the vital services provided by the Nunavik Police Service (NPS).

For the past several days, the Nunavik Police Service has been receiving a distressing number of prank calls reporting active gunman threats, including threats to harm or kill individuals within our community. These calls are not only deeply disturbing but also pose a significant risk to public safety and the efficient operation of our emergency services.

We want to be unequivocally clear: these actions must cease immediately. Such calls are not harmless pranks; they are a grave misuse of emergency resources, diverting officers and attention away from genuine emergencies where lives may be at stake. In the wake of the tragic police incident on July 17th, our police serrvice is, understandably, taking extra precautions and responding to every call of this nature with the utmost seriousness and a heightened level of response. This means that every prank call unnecessarily escalates tension and places both our officers and community members in potentially dangerous situations.

To ensure the accuracy and extent of these reports, I have formally requested the supervising officer of the local NPS detachment and the 911 Call Center to provide full transcripts and recordings of all calls pertaining to these alleged threats. We are committed to verifying every detail and taking appropriate action.

The safety and well-being of every resident of Inukjuak are paramount. Any individual found to be making these false reports will face serious consequences under the law. We urge those responsible to consider the severe implications of their actions, which could lead to someone getting seriously hurt or, tragically, even losing their life due to diverted resources or heightened responses.

We call upon all members of our community to remain vigilant, to cooperate with the authorities, and to understand the critical importance of using emergency services responsibly. If you have any information regarding these prank calls, please contact the Nunavik Police Service immediately.

Let us work together for a better future to ensure Inukjuak remains a safe and secure place for everyone.
