Fatal Incident in Inukjuak on July 17, 2025

Kuujjuaq, QC, July 18, 2025 – At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, Nunavik Police Service officers responded to an emergency call reporting a case of forcible confinement at a residence in Inukjuak.

Upon entering the home to investigate, officers were confronted by an individual armed with a knife. During the confrontation, the officers discharged their service weapons, striking the individual. First responders transported the individual to the local health centre, where he was pronounced dead.

As required by law in these circumstances, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) has been assigned to investigate this incident. Video evidence from police officers body-worn cameras has been provided to the BEI. The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, and will not return to active duty pending the outcome of the investigation.

The NPS is reserving further public comment until the BEI has completed its investigation and presented a report.
