Fatal Incident in Kangiqsualujjuaq on May 6, 2025

Kuujjuaq, QC, May 7, 2025 – At 10:30pm, on Tuesday, May 6, two officers in Kangiqsualujjuaq, wearing active bodycams, located an individual who had a warrant for his arrest.

When the officers informed the person that he was under arrest, the suspect actively resisted. The officers deployed pepper spray in an attempt to subdue the suspect, who continued to evade the police. The suspect then confronted the officers with a knife. One of the officers deployed a taser, which was not effective. As the confrontation evolved, an officer discharged his service weapon and wounded the suspect. The wounded individual was transported to the local health centre, where he was pronounced dead.

As a result of the incident, the matter has been referred for investigation to the Bureau des Enquêtes Indépendantes (BEI). The bodycam video footage has also been shared with the BEI. The NPS officer has been placed on administrative leave and will not resume active patrol duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
The NPS is reserving further public comment until the BEI has completed its investigation and presented a report.
